In our endeavours to help our clients achieve and maintain healthy living, working and recreational environments we constantly work towards being the leading Health and Safety service provider no matter what industry we operate in. The retail industry, being a working environment for some and a recreational environment for others, is not traditionally perceived as a high-risk environment. However, there are many hidden health and safety hazards in this industry that pose a risk to both consumers and workers operating in this industry.
For those working in the retail industry, injuries can be caused by a number of workplace perils. Some of these include: injuries caused by the manual handling of goods (lifting, carrying), slipping, tripping, falling, air and noise pollution, working with dangerous machinery and chemicals, electricity, repetitive activities (causing musculoskeletal injuries), bad ergonomics and so forth.
On the other hand, employers in the Retail industry cannot only focus on the safety of their employees. Due to the nature of the retail industry, many of a retail business’s operations don’t solely happen behind the scenes where only authorised personnel are allowed – patrons, more often than not, enter the operational area of retail businesses and thereby add additional considerations when working out a health and safety plan.
